Enchanting Finnish Lapland: A Journey through Winter Wonderland

Find out all about our mystical trip to Father Christmas' homeland

Imagine this: a vast, white landscape shimmering under a sky filled with dancing northern lights. A place where peace, nature, and adventure go hand in hand. That's Lapland, a magical region stretching across the northern parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and even a part of Russia. Here, you'll find endless forests, frozen lakes, and... .

Our trip through Lapland was unforgettable. Who doesn't dream of it? Cruising through an untouched landscape on a snowmobile, husky sled rides, seeing reindeer, skiing in -20°C, and after a busy day, relaxing in a traditional sauna after a day in the snow – Lapland has it all. Let yourself be inspired to embark on your own journey to this unique winter wonderland.

Ready to put on your warm boots and start the adventure?

We flew with Finnair from Brussels to Ivalo, with a quick but smooth transfer in Helsinki. From Ivalo airport, a comfortable bus took us to Saariselkä, a charming winter village in the middle of the wilderness. Finding our cabin, booked through Booking.com, proved to be a bit of a challenge, which led to a somewhat chaotic start to our trip. But once we were settled in and took our first walk through the virgin, crunching snow, all the stress melted away like snow in the sun (pun intended ;-) ) – even the cold suddenly felt less sharp. Lapland immediately cast its enchanting spell on us.

We had pre-booked our excursions online with Husky & Co, a local company with great reviews. The departure point was within walking distance of our cabin. No hassle with transport; we could step out the door and go straight on our way for a day full of unforgettable experiences in the snow.

A husky ride is an absolute must – a unique experience you simply can't miss! The feeling of speed, the fresh air, and the stunning views make it an unforgettable adventure. The reindeer farm, on the other hand, was a bit of a letdown. While it's nice to see the reindeer up close, we found it to be pricey for what was offered.

Additionally, we chose to hunt for the northern lights during a snowmobile tour. This seemed like a great idea, but unfortunately, we missed the magical light show. In hindsight, we would recommend booking the snowmobile tour separately as a pure adventure, and for the northern lights hunt, opting for a van tour instead. These guides can adapt to the weather conditions and take you to the best spots, giving you a better chance of seeing the northern lights.

And to top it all off, we even went skying on the Northernmost Ski Resort in Europe: Saariselka Ski.
