Here's what you need to know about traveling to Malaysia and getting around once you're there—how to get in, the best ways to explore the island, and where we stayed 

Flight & other transport

For the internal flights we took Malaysian airways and Air Asia where I largely preferred Malaysian airways. 

For road transport we used the Grab app which is absolutely amazing. It's extremely reliable and very well priced. I felt welcome and safe every step of the way.  

Stays 

Perhentian: Tuna Bay Resort 

Kota Bharu: Ibis Style (for stopover before flying to Kuala Lumpur for our return) 

Cell phone reception

We got a local card the first day at a store in Kuala Lumpur - super cheap for a lot of data. Then download the Grab app immediately and you're good to go!
