Mallorca: beauty beyond the beaches

Mallorca beyond the beach: a springtime hiking adventure.

When most people think of Mallorca, they picture sun-soaked beaches, turquoise waters, and summer crowds flocking to the coast. But we decided to experience a different side of this Balearic gem—one that's often overlooked. In April, when the island is just beginning to wake from its winter slumber and the Mediterranean heat hasn't yet set in, Mallorca transforms into a hiker's paradise. Rolling green hills, dramatic mountain trails, and quiet villages welcomed us, offering a perfect blend of nature, tranquility, and adventure. Forget the beach towels—we laced up our hiking boots and set out to explore Mallorca on foot.

We flew to Mallorca with Ryanair from Charleroi in a direct flight taking only about 2 hours!

We stayed in Sa Coma on the East coast of Mallorca in a big hotel named Hipotels Mediterraneo Club. They had really good price over Easter and we just felt like being pampered. No shopping, no cooking, no decision fatigue—just pure simplicity. Mornings and evenings at the buffet, and the rest of the day spent hiking through Mallorca's stunning landscapes. We booked a garden studio so we'd have a separate living room to relax in, just in case the weather turned (spoiler: it didn't—lucky us). There were plenty of little shops nearby where we could grab lunch and snacks for our hikes, which made everything super easy. Sa Coma turned out to be the perfect base—peaceful and quiet in April, but not so empty that it felt deserted. Free parking was easy to find close to the hotel, and we loved having a beautiful beach and promenade just steps away.

We rented our little car with Record Go which has it's office at the aiport with an automated check in, which was really convenient. They offer really good prices and there was no hassle at all! Driving in Mallorca is so easy, the roads are good, you can find the way easily, there's parking everywhere and drivers are courteous.

Mallorca offers a wide range of hikes, from easy scenic strolls to truly challenging mountain treks—there's something for everyone. Aside from hiking, we also visited the Drach Caves, though I wouldn't necessarily say it's a must-do. It's a major tourist attraction and even in April, it was packed. The experience felt a bit rushed—they guide you quickly through the cave to a large underground lake where musicians float by on a boat, playing atmospheric music. While the music was beautiful, the whole thing felt a little too staged, and after that, you're stuck in a long line to either walk back the same way or take a short boat ride. It wasn't a bad experience by any means, but honestly, if you're short on time, it's one you could easily skip without regret.

So here's my recommendation: give Mallorca a try in the low season—you won't regret it. The locals are warm and welcoming, hotel prices are surprisingly good, and the island's hiking options are as diverse as they are beautiful. Whether you're after relaxed coastal walks or challenging mountain trails, there's something here for everyone.
